I thank you all and welcome you most cordially. I believe our dear guests will also remember Montenegro, and Berane, by traditional Montenegrin hospitality. This is the house in which Duke Gavro Vukovic lived, the founder of modern Montenegrin diplomacy, after whom this Montenegro Summer School for Young Diplomats was named.

I would like to express my happiness for being a part of this opening ceremony. It is already the third cohort of the Diplomatic School in Montenegro, and we in UNDP are very proud to be co-organizing this excellent, leading initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro.

When I saw this year’s theme for the Summer School for Young Diplomats, it reminded me a bit of Greek Mythology. You’ll surely remember that Hermes is considered to be a father of all ambassadors. They say he was a model that diplomats were based on - earnest, but also missionary. However, he started his career by stealing the cattle from Apollo. There are certainly lots of things to learn from Hermes, but I think that stealing of cattle from your neighbor is probably not a good way of building good and stable relationships with your neighbors.
